All young people to learn about Personal Finance

E-mail Print PDF

Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families confirmed that all young people will learn Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education. PSHE education includes Personal Finance and will be made compulsory in schools from September 2011.

PSHE gives young people the information they need to make the right choices about their future. It covers a range of issues young people growing up today face such as managing personal finance; leading healthier lifestyles; body image and health issues; careers education; avoiding harm from alcohol and drugs; and sex and relationships.

pfeg (which offers advice and support to schools and teachers in teaching financial capability) welcomed the announcement. Ed Balls confirmed that the programmes of study that already exist in the secondary curriculum and that are proposed for the new primary curriculum will be the basis of the core entitlement that all pupils should receive.  This means that, subject to the legislation being approved by Parliament, financial capability will be required to be taught to all pupils in every school in England – a situation that has never before existed.
